Summary of Chapter 7

Developmental editing, line editing, and copyediting all accomplish different functions in a book draft to bring it closer to its ideal publishing state. They can be performed many times and in any order by you or a team of professional editors you hire. The best way to apply them will depend on how well-organized your book is, how you’ve phrased each sentence, and how many typographical mistakes you’ve made.

Every author should perform several rounds of editing on their own work, even if they decide to bring professionals on board to assist. You will need to go over every section of your words many times to determine if they are contributing something worthwhile to the message, if they are appearing in the ideal order for comprehension, and if they are phrased in the optimal manner for the reading experience. A large amount of your first draft may need to be eliminated, reordered, or rewritten to make your book as good as it can be.

When you feel your book draft is in a state that approximates what you intend to communicate, you can recruit a team of beta readers from your target audience to critique your work. Their feedback will help you determine what you are doing right and wrong so far, giving you invaluable ideas about how to move forward. It will be your responsibility to determine what feedback is worth incorporating or ignoring depending on how relevant it is to your goals for your book.
